Chronicles: Prologue
Just a few days ago, in the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate, the owner of the Den of The Seven Vales tavern, named Avon Colton, recruited a group of misfits to rob a rich merchant that decided to settle there in the Lower CIty instead of the usual Upper City.
The group was comprised of:
Two very young and rebellious tieflings named Iwia e Malakan
A soldier Dragonborn, also very young and spirited, named Sora
A young human girl who wanted to steal to the rich to give to the poor, Rowan
A small and very skilled halfling, Serafina, hired mostly because of her thieving abilities
A not-so-young-anymore woman bard named Morgan
None of them really knows why a tavern owner wanted to rob a merchant or how he got all the information, but all of them were in that moment in need of money. The human merchant was known as Shander. He bought a big house not far from the tavern and eventually became really famous. It was clear that he was becoming richer and richer selling all sorts of items and probably wouldn’t have missed the gold pieces in his main vault, so that is what they went for. Morgan went into the house as bard, to entertain the merchant and his servants and to seduce and distract him while the small halfling would open the vault with the help of one of the tieflings. The other human girl and the other tiefling were just next door, ready to grab the gold upon successful opening of the vault and the big dragonborn was outside, on the lookout.
The night was very dark and perfect for the job. The dragonborn stood outside the house while Morgan was singing and entertaining the rich guy. She charmed him into revealing he was not just a merchant but a member of The Guild, and that his house was a safe house for The Guild’s members. Unfortunately, before Morgan could tell the others, he sent one of his servants to the cellar to get more wine, the servant caught the halfling and the tiefling in the act of forcing the vault and started screaming “thief, thief!” while launching a knife right in the eyes of the nearby tiefling (Malakan) killing him. The other tiefling and the girl promptly ran out - and the halfling behind them - but the servant already knew her face. The dragonborn, the human and the tiefling were also seen from afar running but nobody in the house actually saw their faces. Morgan also got out of the house in a hurry in all the commotion, but not before using her charms once more to convince Shander that she had nothing to do with it and he fell for it, but his servants still suspect the bard was part of the robbery plan.
The group ran into the night to an abandoned house in the neighborhood of The Steeps, following Iwia’s directions. That was the same house the tiefling and his friend used to hang in, and they knew it was a safe place to hide and make a plan for the future.
Morgan had finally the chance to tell the others that Shander, was in fact Rash Glitterbeard, son of the famous Rakkath from Baldur’s Gate, a very powerful member of The Guild and he was only disguised as merchant but the truth is, they didn’t try to steal some gold from a rich businessman, but from a Guild’s vault, that probably contained something more valuable than gold to the Guild. They got into something bigger than them, and Avon Colton most likely knew about it and sent them to be killed.
Rash got angry that a little town thief tried to rob him and before the night was over he already started investigating. His servants quickly reported that the unusual group of a big creature (they don’t know it was a dragonborn), 2 tieflings, 2 humans and a little halfling was previously seen talking to Avon Colton, the tavern’s owner. They went searching for him but they could not find him. He left his house in a rush, leaving everything behind and disappeared - nobody knows where.
Serafina is now searched by the Guild, they know their face. They also know that she is not alone and travels with a group. They want to make her pay for her actions so she wants to get away from Baldur’s Gate and travel elsewhere. She wants to start using her rogue skills to help others instead of just for her benefit, but after the failed con she will do anything not to be seen or recognized. Morgan tells her she will help, after all the bard is a free spirit that has not settled anywhere yet and she is a master of disguise so she wants to help Serafina not to be recognized. The bard also wants to get out of the city and, not being sure she actually fooled Rash Glitterbeard, decided it was best to lay low.
Iwia, the tiefling, is heartbroken. He lost his best friend in the robbery and has nowhere to go. His mom is still in jail, she sacrificed herself for him already, so he decided to prove he is worthy of that sacrifice and to start using his abilities to help others in need.
Sora, the dragonborn, was a soldier in her past, and she chose the wrong path and made the wrong acquaintances along the way; but she also, like the others, found the experience to be a wake-up call and decided to become a cleric and to stick with the little creatures and fight with them, at least until she find herself in a place she can call home.
Rowan was passing through Baldur's Gate showing her warrior skills because she wanted to be hired by somebody to fight. She regretted choosing this job but - like everybody else - she didn’t think she had mouch choice but to get out of the city.
They all knew that the best chance they had was to stick together and get out of Baldur’s Gate together, watching each other’s backs.
